Translytical is a word that kept its title while losing its meaning. The newest scorecard under it, The Forrester Wave: Translytical Data Platforms, Q4 2024, has been published since November 12, 2024. A planned flag on this category is out of date by one edition, and the edition the flag missed is the one where the market quietly outgrew the word itself.

In 2017, translytical was a rebellion. The pitch was radical for its time: one database engine for transactions and analytics, no extract-transform-load pipelines, no copying data between systems just to query it. By 2024 the rebellion had won so completely that the word stopped being a category and became a checkbox. Every database worth buying is translytical now, so the scorecard measures everything else. That is the story of all three editions of this Wave, and it is the reason the Q4 2024 report reads differently from its title.

What the word means now

Forrester's 2024 definition, quoted in the evaluated vendors' own materials: translytical data platforms are "next-generation data solutions built on a single database engine to seamlessly support transactional, operational, and analytical workloads without compromising data integrity, performance, or real-time analytics."

Compare that to what the 2024 criteria actually reward. The maximum-score criteria across the Leaders include multimodel support, search, development tools and APIs, streaming, data modeling, real-time analytics, vision, and roadmap. The single-engine promise is now the entry ticket. The differentiation happens in multimodel breadth, streaming, and developer experience.

The word promised one engine for everything. The market delivered that engine everywhere. The field that once meant vendors like SAP HANA and in-memory specialists now crowns a document database and a PostgreSQL fork. The category was absorbed by its own success, and the 2024 scorecard is the document of the absorption.

The November 2024 edition: The Forrester Wave: Translytical Data Platforms, Q4 2024

The newest edition evaluates fifteen vendors across twenty six criteria, spanning current offering, strategy, and market presence.

Four Leaders are publicly confirmed.

Oracle sits at the top again, with the highest rankings in both current offering and strategy, a position it also held in the 2022 edition. Two editions in a row, the incumbent database giant leads the category it helped define.

MongoDB took the highest possible scores in nine criteria: multimodel, search, development tools and API, scale optimization, streaming, platform management, roadmap, adoption, and number of customers. Forrester's positioning line is the tell: "an excellent choice for organizations looking to enhance their document and NoSQL platforms with real-time insights by leveraging translytical capabilities." The document database is not joining the category. The category is being added to the document database.

Google entered the Leader tier for the first time, on the strength of AlloyDB, which earned five-out-of-five scores in eleven criteria. Google did not enter this market by building a database. It entered by forking one: AlloyDB is PostgreSQL-compatible. The purest statement of where translytical went is that a Postgres fork leads it.

InterSystems held its Leader position with the highest possible scores in data modeling, real-time analytics and streaming, plus vision and roadmap. InterSystems is the category's continuity vendor, the one name that was a Leader in 2022 and again in 2024 while the world around it kept changing engines.

The confirmed Strong Performers include Microsoft, with Forrester noting it needs to work on market adaptability and product diversity, SingleStore, called "a very compelling real-time platform" with the highest possible scores in vision and real-time analytics, Couchbase, Aerospike, Redis, PingCAP, and OceanBase. The remainder of the field sits behind the paywall. Notably absent from every public confirmation: SAP, whose HANA engine was the number one Leader in this category's first edition.

What changed between 2022 and 2024

Fifteen vendors and twenty six criteria, exactly as in 2022. The stability ends there.

The 2022 edition, authored by Noel Yuhanna and Mike Gualtieri, crowned five Leaders: Oracle on top, then Microsoft, InterSystems, MongoDB, and SAP. Strong Performers were SingleStore, Couchbase, IBM, Redis, and PingCAP. Contenders: Cockroach Labs, GridGain, DataStax, and Aerospike. Challenger: GigaSpaces.

Two years later, the Leader tier lost Microsoft and SAP and gained Google. Microsoft's slide comes with a specific critique attached: market adaptability and product diversity. A platform giant that owns the SQL Server estate did not automatically hold a tier in a category where the bar moved to multimodel breadth and streaming. And SAP, the vendor that was the entire reason this category existed in 2017, has no public placement in 2024 at all.

The founder-era names keep sliding. Aerospike and Redis hold in the Strong Performer tier. DataStax, a first-edition Leader, sat in the 2022 Contender tier and has since been acquired by IBM. The 2017 rebellion was fought by specialists. The 2024 scorecard is won by platforms.

The first scorecard and what became of it

The Q4 2017 edition is the category's founding document, and it reads like a roster from another market.

Twelve vendors were evaluated, and the Leaders were ranked: SAP first, its HANA platform praised for its ability to "crush translytical workloads." Then Oracle, Redis Labs, IBM, and DataStax. The Strong Performer band held Aerospike, MemSQL, VoltDB, Microsoft, Splice Machine, GigaSpaces, and NuoDB.

What became of that roster is the market's own history in miniature. MemSQL became SingleStore. NuoDB was acquired by Dassault Systèmes. DataStax went from fifth-ranked Leader to Contender to an IBM acquisition. VoltDB is gone. Of the five first-edition Leaders, exactly two, Oracle and Redis, remain near the top of the scorecard eight years later. One founding Leader, SAP, appears in no public confirmation of the 2024 field.

The category did not move on from its founding vendors. The founding vendors were overtaken, and the scorecard simply kept recording it.

The drift toward multimodel

The research stream itself has started describing this market in AI vocabulary instead.

Forrester now also publishes The Multimodel Data Platforms Landscape, Q4 2025, authored by principal analyst Indranil Bandyopadhyay, covering eighteen vendors and positioning multimodel data platforms as the "missing layer" in the AI stack, the brain and memory of AI agents. The framing fuses graph models for reasoning, document and vector models for memory, and key-value models for ground truth. Vendors like Arango are cited for agentic AI, operational 360-degree views, and digital twin modeling.

That is where the energy went. The word translytical answered a question from 2017: can one engine do transactions and analytics? The question of 2025 is different: can one platform serve as the memory of an AI system? The Q4 2024 Wave still scores the old question well. But the newest research framing in the same analyst firm has moved to the new one, and a buyer planning around this category should read both.

What a twenty-one-month-old scorecard cannot tell you

The honest limitation of this category's newest edition is its age.

November 12, 2024 is almost two years ago as of this writing. The vector rush, agentic AI workloads, and the AI data-stack repricing have happened since. The Q4 2024 criteria do score vector capability indirectly, MongoDB's citation mentions vector among its multimodel expansions, but the scorecard predates the moment vector search became the primary purchasing driver in this market. A tier from November 2024 measures the market as it was, not as it is being repriced.

Second, the field is only partially public. Four Leaders and seven Strong Performers are confirmed; the remaining placements, including whatever happened to SAP, sit with Forrester clients. Any shortlist built from public announcements is built on three quarters of the scorecard.

Third, the category is mid-absorption. The word translytical persists in the report title, but the market it describes has been absorbed into multimodel platforms, and Forrester's own newer Landscape describes those platforms in AI terms. A scorecard of a category mid-absorption is a snapshot of a reorganization, not a settled ranking.

Three questions the 2024 edition leaves open

One: which of the twenty six criteria are load-bearing for you? The scorecard rewards breadth, multimodel, streaming, developer tools. Most organizations run one primary workload pattern and never exercise the other twenty five criteria they are paying to score. List your actual patterns before you let the breadth scores matter.

Two: where is vector and agent memory in the contract? The Q4 2024 Wave predates the AI repricing of this market. Ask every shortlisted vendor for their post-2024 roadmap on vector, graph, and agent memory, and read Forrester's Q4 2025 Multimodel Data Platforms Landscape before you finalize, because that is the framing the analyst firm itself now uses.

Three: what is the vendor's own arc across editions? Microsoft slid from Leader to Strong Performer in two years. SAP went from the category's founding number one to public silence. Tier churn across editions is the real signal in this market. Ask each shortlisted vendor to account for their trajectory across the three scorecards, and treat evasiveness as a data point.

The single-engine bet this category makes is one of two competing architectural answers to the same problem; the other is Data Fabric Platforms, which distributes rather than consolidates, and whose newest Leader tier is won by vendors making the opposite wager.
