The 2025 Magic Quadrant for Intranet Packaged Solutions, published October 6, 2025, scores a technology that spent a decade being pronounced dead and kept being the place work actually happened. The AI era has revived the intranet, and the edition's sharpest finding attaches the condition: AI capabilities within intranet platforms are only as effective as the content they index.
The intranet that refused to die
The intranet's obituaries were written repeatedly, first by social collaboration tools, then by Slack-style messaging, then by the employee app. Each wave was supposed to replace the intranet, and each wave discovered the same thing: the organization still needed the durable home, the place where the policies live, the news actually publishes, and the new employee finds what they need.
The intranet survived because the alternatives solved a different problem. The chat replaced the conversation; it never replaced the document, the directory, or the destination.
The intranet was pronounced dead and kept being the place work actually happened, and the 2025 quadrant scores the market's AI-era revival.
The October 2025 Magic Quadrant for Intranet Packaged Solutions, and its six-Leader rung
The edition published October 6, 2025, authored by Mike Gotta, Jed Cawthorne, Helen Poitevin, and Alexandra Earl. The 2026 edition has not published yet, with a conference session on the quadrant scheduled for April 2026.
Six Leaders hold the rung: Unily, LumApps, Simpplr, Workvivo, Staffbase, and Interact, with LumApps and Workvivo both on third consecutive Leader placements. Omnia is the confirmed Challenger, cited for execution and vision, holding a 4.6 out of 5 Peer Insights rating.
Six Leaders is a market with six different theories of the same homepage, and the rung's breadth says the intranet's buyer has not converged on one shape: the enterprise platform, the frontline-first app, the AI-search layer, each holds a seat.
The AI condition
The edition's most important sentence is its condition: AI capabilities within intranet platforms are only as effective as the content they index.
The finding re-prices the whole category's AI story. The intranet AI's value is retrieval: the assistant that answers the policy question, finds the document, points to the owner. But the assistant answers from the intranet's actual content, and an intranet whose content is stale, duplicated, and ungoverned produces an assistant that is confident and wrong.
AI made the intranet relevant again, on one condition, and the condition is the content's quality, not the model's.
The governance predictor
The edition's second finding is the market's most practical: governance is the strongest predictor of long-term intranet success.
The finding is the intranet industry's accumulated wisdom, stated as a criterion. The intranet fails slowly: content rots, owners leave, search degrades, and the platform's value drains without anyone announcing the failure. The vendors that ship governance machinery, content lifecycle, ownership tracking, publication workflows, are the ones whose deployments survive, and the quadrant now says so in scoring terms.
Governance is the strongest predictor the quadrant has ever named, and the buyer should treat it as the primary criterion.
The six Leaders' different bets
The six-Leader rung spans the market's six bets on what the intranet's center of gravity is. The enterprise engagement platforms, Unily and Interact, bet on the company-wide destination. LumApps bets on the ecosystem around Google and Microsoft productivity stacks. Simpplr bets on the employee experience layer with the AI assistant at its center. Workvivo bets on the social and community heart, the culture layer. Staffbase bets on the frontline and deskless workforce.
The bets are not equivalent, and the buyer's workforce shape picks the rung's seat: the deskless-heavy organization and the knowledge-worker organization are buying different intranets that happen to share a quadrant.
What the next edition is waiting on
The honest limit is the edition's own age and the absence of its successor. The October 2025 edition is the newest, the 2026 edition's field is unannounced, and the AI condition the edition names is moving the market faster than the annual cycle.
The other limit is the record: the Leaders' cautions have not been widely republished, and the governance finding, the strongest predictor, is the criterion the vendor announcements quote least. The buyer is shopping a rung of six with the edition's sharpest guidance available, and the rest of the evidence behind the placements still in the report itself.
Four questions for the digital workplace buyer
Which workforce shape is the intranet for? The six Leaders bet on different shapes: deskless, enterprise, social, ecosystem. Match the vendor to the workforce's actual composition before the feature comparison.
What does the content audit say before the AI is switched on? The AI condition is the buyer's own due diligence. Audit the intranet's content quality first, because the assistant will inherit whatever the audit finds.
Is governance native or an afterthought? The strongest predictor deserves the hardest question. Ask for the content lifecycle, ownership tracking, and publication workflow demonstrated, not described.
Which bet is the vendor actually placing? The rung's six bets are public. Ask each vendor what it believes the intranet's center of gravity is, and compare the answers against the buyer's own belief, because a mismatch here outlasts the contract.

Gartner Magic Quadrant
Category definition, vendor inclusion, and quadrant placement in this article draw on Gartner's coverage of intranet packaged solutions, evaluated in the Magic Quadrant for Intranet Packaged Solutions, published October 6, 2025, authored by Mike Gotta, Jed Cawthorne, Helen Poitevin, and Alexandra Earl. Confirmed Leaders are Unily, LumApps, Simpplr, Workvivo, Staffbase, and Interact, with LumApps and Workvivo on third consecutive placements. Omnia is a confirmed Challenger. The edition finds that AI capabilities are only as effective as the content they index, and that governance is the strongest predictor of long-term intranet success. This October 2025 edition remains the newest as of August 2026.

This pairs directly with Outsourced Digital Workplace Services. Gartner's 2025 quadrant tracks a metric change that reframes the whole category: the old SLA measured whether the ticket got closed, and the new XLA measures whether the employee actually got their afternoon back.
The neighboring coverage here is Digital Employee Experience Management Solutions. Most technology problems inside a company never become a support ticket. This category exists to make the gap between what IT measures and what employees actually experience visible.
